Armenia is rich in basalt. Basalt is very resistant to weathering, therefore, often used for exterior decoration of buildings, for manufacturing of outdoor sculptures, including paving.
Basalt is water-resistant, and it is also resistant to various kinds of influences. Due to the porosity of Sisian basalt, it has a low weight, so covering walls inside
or outside the buildings does not create a large load on the foundation.
Two types of basalt are mined in Armenia and named after locations where they are mined:
– The densest basalt is mined from Aramus or Yerevan, usually, it has light-gray to gray color.
– The porous basalt is mined from Sisian, usually, it has many shades of grey to pink color.
